Favorite Dramas: Smiling Pasta

Posted By on December 22, 2011

2006 Taiwanese drama Smiling Pasta is an old rom-com favorite, and upon rewatching it recently I realized that while it is extremely limited and sometimes very silly, the heart of it is still there, and the reason I loved it (and found it almost as addicting the second time). Namely, the shiny, sparkly, bright-shining chemistry between leads Nicholas Teo and Cyndi Wang, and the really startling attractiveness of Malaysian pop star Nicholas Teo.

He Qun (Nicholas Teo in a role barely removed from real life) is a wildly popular heartthrob and pop singer with a troubled past, and Xiao Si (Cyndi Wang) is the bubbly, accident-prone daughter of a restaurant owner who seems to be cursed to never be in a relationship for longer than three months. When the paparazzi catch them in a seeming scandal, they decide to pretend to be engaged to save He Qun’s career, and of course things go from there.

This is not a great or a brilliant drama, but it is thoroughly adorable and enjoyable, and the main relationship is fast-paced and often-changing. I certainly recommend for lovers of Taiwanese dramas.
