Caffeinated Review: The Three Musketeers

Posted By on October 28, 2011

The Three Musketeers is the third film adaptation of the classic Dumas novel I’ve seen, and falls somewhere in between the fantastic 1993 The Three Musketeers with Chris O’Donnell and Kiefer Sutherland, and 2001′s lackluster The Musketeer. One might think that it’s really hard to screw up a story involving four sword-wielding heroes taking down an evil cardinal and his guard for the sake of their country while enjoying plenty of booze, romance, and banter along the way – and one would be right. But somehow Paul W.S. Anderson manages it. This is not a good movie in any way – lush sets and a few good action pieces involving airship battles were the only highlights of an otherwise incredibly trite, unimaginative production. It rehashes the book without flair for the first 20 minutes, then deviates from it wildly before finally rising to the least climactic climax I’ve perhaps ever seen. A cast of almost universally talented actors is wasted in this. If you must see it, watch it on DVD, but whatever you do, don’t pay money for it.
