Columbiana: Bring on a Woman with a Gun

One of the movies I’ve been most anticipating for the past few months is Columbiana. There’s absolutely nothing to not like about Columbiana.

-It’s an action flick with a bad-ass female heroine

-It’s a revenge flick

-It’s a bad-ass revenge flick starring Zoe Saldana

…Yeah. Films with a tough, empowered female lead are incredibly rare upon the ground – beyond the little niche carved out by Angelina Jolie in films like Tomb Raider, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and the recent Salt, they almost don’t exist (forget the awful Elektra). So I was hooked the second I saw the trailer for this – it’s pretty much everything I look for in a film. Add on to that Michael Vartan, whom I’ve had a soft spot the size of Alaska for ever since Alias, and yes, I’ll be seeing this as soon as it hits screens. (Vartan was an interesting choice, by the by – his role in this is quite similar to his role in Alias - a strong man who loves and must deal with a driven, extraordinary woman on a mission).

Flicks and Bits interviewed Saldana the other day about her role. She says she was both intimidated and stimulated by her character Catelya.

On her action training: “She’s very much like a Molotov cocktail of weapon training, of fight training, she didn’t learn it in a professional school, it was her uncle teaching her what he had learned. So I knew that eliminated pretty much any kind of martial arts, or any kind of gun handling that has made me look like I have trained with a military force, the police force, or anything like that. That gave me so much room to find my own way, and create my own rhythm that I wanted to have when I dealt with guns or knives or things like that.”
