Cooking Bites: French Toast

Posted By on March 20, 2011

French toast is one of those things which has so many variations that it’s sometimes hard to find a basic recipe for it. I like this one, from the ever-ready Allrecipes.com – it’s basic but delicious, and has the all-important cinnamon ingredient. You can make French toast with just eggs and milk, but trust me, it doesn’t taste the same. I’d recommend doubling or tripling this recipe – I used 3 eggs, 1 cup of milk etc and it made enough for 4-5 slices of bread.

Also, French toast is ten thousand times better with brown or wheat bread. I made this with Oroweat 100% Whole Wheat Bread (readily available at Ralph’s and everywhere else) and it was significantly more tasty than white bread. The wheat bread is thicker and more flavorful and the French toast comes out with this great texture and rich flavor all through it.

Make sure you don’t soak the bread too long – if you soak it for more than 30 seconds or so it gets really soggy and sometimes fall apart when you go to cook it. Finally, feel free to skip the nutmeg or vanilla if you don’t have any on hand – they add a little extra flavor, especially the nutmeg, but aren’t required.

  • 6 3 thick slices bread
  • 2 eggs
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • salt to taste

Directions

  1. Beat together egg, milk, salt, desired spices and vanilla.
  2. Heat a lightly oiled griddle of skillet over medium-high flame.
  3. Dunk each slice of bread in egg mixture, soaking both sides. Place in pan, and cook on both sides until golden. Serve hot

Sprinkle with powdered sugar or add whipped cream and strawberries as desired.

And there you have it!
