True Grit
The Fighter
What’s the Story, Morning Glory?
The Fall
The Duchess
Initial D
Never Let Me Go
Romancing the Stone-delightfully tongue-in-cheek and funny spoof on Indiana Jones and romance novel plots. Michael Douglas is apparently tolerable when he’s pre-40. A great light watch reminiscent of Airplane!
Sophie’s Revenge – I thought it didn’t exist – a well-made Asian rom-com.
Clash of the Titans-visually stunning and reasonably entertaining, but as cliched and plotless as expected
Pan’s Labyrinth
Things We Lost in the Fire – this was an odd film, luminous and well-acted with beautiful cinematography, yet incredibly slow-paced and too reliant on visual montages and long slow-motion shots in place of dialogue/action to be successful. Moving, but not memorable.
Rachel Getting Married – shot with a documentary-style directness, this is one of those bitter family dramas. The acting is superb and the film wisely makes the sister relationship the heart of the film, though one or two other relationships which could have used more development are necessarily sacrificed. The ending brilliantly evokes the lack of answers and clean endings in life – only jagged edges and moving on.
Limitless – mildly entertaining, mediocre flick
My Name is Khan
Beastly – I have a very high tolerance for cheesy romantic flicks. And this is still one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.
Dirty Dancing
Quo Vadis
I’m a Cyborg But That’s Ok
Stray Bullet
Peppermint Candy
Fast Five
The Adjustment Bureau
The Help – unexpectedly luminous and moving. Not saccharine.
Crazy Stupid Love
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights
To Have and Have Not
The Big Sleep
Houseboat
His Girl Friday
Annie Hall
Vicki Cristina Barcelona
Love Me If You Dare
When Harry Met Sally
The Terminator
The Terminator 2
Eagle Eye
Noel
Thor
Captain America – an uninspired adaptation of a classic story
Drive – powerful, near-visionary neo-noir
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Real Steel
Abduction
The Three Musketeers
Brick
Lucas
Unknown
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious
Midnight in Paris
