Was sick so I stayed home today. For some reason (okay, I admit it – it was because I watched the Korean tearjerker A Millionaire’s First Love, which was by the by lovely and not nearly as cliched as it sounds) I got to thinking about death, which set me to wondering which verse in the Bible I would turn to in the face of death. And oddly, a particular one immediately sprang to mind – “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” – John 14:27. It’s not my favorite verse – that would be, or rather has been, Matthew 11: 28, come to me all you who labor and are weary laden. But the Matthew verse speaks of life, of ongoing life, of how to best endure and live within the life of faith. The peace verse, on the other hand, is more transcendent. Words to live by. That verse I could cling to to discover how to live in the face of death.
It’s a funny world we live in.
